PRESS RELEASE

From February 18 (opening at 6:00 p.m.) to May 9, 2010, 70 artists from 16 countries will exhibit their work at the Mole Vanvitelliana, an 18th century fortress on the water at the entrance of the historic port of Ancona. The exhibition, Arrivals and Departures_Europe represents communities that border the Mediterranean, or the countries of the Euro, considering it necessary and useful to create a sort of artistic map that also epistemologically redefines the geographic norms. These places are always a result of the layering of histories and cultures, which become states of mind and consciousness. The 150 works at the Mole, from Austria, Belgium, Cyprus, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, Malta, the Netherlands, Portugal, Slovakia, Slovenia, and Spain deliver a acute and tangible vision of the old continent, where the personal dialogue of the artists with geographical elements, and attention to identity and everyday life, show a clear and concrete indication of the contemporary.

Andrea Bruciati, who together with Walter Gasperoni curated the exhibition, points out in his catalog essay (SilvanaEditoriale) how “…the artists of this generation can return without any concern to using representation, because it is by now certain that referential content is not the subject of the work. In this decade marked by post-production it is obvious that representation can be used for something else. This becomes evident in every language and every media, be it in the elaboration of an object, as in the modified atlases by Etienne Chambaud, the assembly of video recorders, as in the short disintegrating piece by Haris Epaminonda, or the re-interpretation of design and painting, as in the delicate watercolors of Ulla von Brandenburg.”

The exhibition of Roberto Bua and Joan Martos, with its overlapping sounds and sequences of projected images, amalgamates without incorporating or schematizing the different languages used in sculpture, photography, painting, and installation. The heterogeneity of the creations outlines new boundaries for working. From television to the Internet, and local music to big city franchises, this is confirmed as the Europe of our time, in its original identity, living for the most part a globalized everyday life.
